![]() ![]() Sqlfmt’s goal is to beautifully format SQL statements. Not just something that puts new lines between all terms, but one that adapts to the functional depth of the statement by grouping blocks together. I wanted a SQL formatter that acted in the same way. As my code gets more complicated or more nested, I just love that it slowly adds newlines to break up functional hierarchy into visual blocks. It has been a complete game changer for me in terms of how I write fancy JS. However, I’ve recently been spoiled in my JavaScript (well, JSX) editing with prettier. ![]() It makes sense that they have easy rules like “each term on its own line”. This is fine and I’m happy they exist and have provided value. Those other formatters undoubtedly use a simpler algorithm for their formatting. I believe that using available space is a requirement for that. I wanted something that I could hook up to my text editor on save and it would always produce beautiful results. While I understand why they do that, I was not satisfied with using them to automatically format my SQL. I tested six of the formatters from the first page of results with the query SELECT 1, 2, and all six of them formatted it onto two or three lines. Why format your SQL with sqlfmt?Ī search for sql formatter uncovers lots of online and offline formatters. sqlfmt is for those who think it is better to have no choice in the SQL formatting than it is to format it by hand. ![]() ![]() In the absence of optimism, the pursuit seems hopeless. If you do not expect to succeed in attaining your goals, you will not try. What are the potential benefits to being optimistic? One is that optimistic expectations are motivating. Their argument was that consistently inaccurate beliefs should persist only if they bring some overall benefit that outweighs the cost. In an influential 2009 paper, the psychologist Ryan McKay and the philosopher Daniel Dennett applied the evolutionary frame of error management theory (which had been developed earlier by the evolutionary psychologists David Buss and Martie Haselton) to predict some of the possible benefits. The consistency of these optimistically wrong expectations suggests that they are a feature of the human mind that has provided some evolutionary advantage. Rather, the point is that the average tendency across all people and situations is to believe that good things are likely to occur. This is not to say that everybody is optimistic all the time about everything (an exception to this general tendency is people diagnosed with depression who tend to have more negative and realistic expectations). Most people remain optimistic even when it is made clear to them that there is no rational basis for their optimism and even in the face of negative feedback or previous failures. Optimism about upcoming events is also surprisingly resilient. Your desires for good things to happen lead you to believe that what you want is likely to occur. Most people’s unrealistic optimism applies to everything from acing a test to avoiding unemployment or a favourite sports team winning the game. On average, people expect good things to happen and bad things to not happen, and these optimistic beliefs are more positive than can be justified by reality. What’s more interesting is that they are consistently wrong in being too optimistic. People feel good when the future looks like it will align with their desires and feel bad when the future looks bleak or when hopes are suddenly crushed by failure.Įven though expectations about what is likely in the future are critical to choices, they are often wrong. Your expectations also impact your emotions. Your expectations about the future affect whether or not you pursue a goal, how much effort you put in, and when you give up. It is also true for more consequential decisions, such as choosing a career path based on the likelihood of success and satisfaction. This is true for small decisions, such as whether or not to bring an umbrella based on the likelihood of rain. What you expect to happen in the future drives your decisions. Our specific project grew out of decades of research showing that expectations matter for people and that, on the whole, people are often overly optimistic. Together with work by others, our findings suggest ways you can benefit from being optimistic about your goals, while minimising the costs. If people always expect to reach their goals and for the future to be bright, doesn’t that risk complacency as they sit back and wait for the good things to happen? And what if they fail to reach their goals? Won’t they feel intensely disappointed because they had such positive expectations? My colleagues and I sought to address these questions in our recent research. Promoting positivity and optimism sounds laudable, but you might have wondered if it’s overly simplistic – after all, what about the possible costs? This focus has partly arisen from decades of research showing that positive thinking benefits our physical and mental health. These days, we hear a lot about the supposed benefits of positive thinking, with an ever-increasing number of apps and social media platforms claiming to help promote our happiness and optimism. 0:01 Brought to you by Curio, a Psyche partner Optimistic people tend to enjoy more success, but that’s only when they put the effort in – wishful thinking is not enough ![]() ![]() This time you can take a mindful walk, where you practice to connect with nature and ask them what they hear or feel. One of my client’s children was asking to meditate with her! We have no idea how he knows meditation at this age, but their soul knows. The parents started to share their transformation journey with their children, which helped them to connect and balance more easily, more effortlessly. All four of those parents have more than one child and they could observe and confirm this different energy, aura or empathic ability closely, so they were able to feel which of their kids are more emphatic. Now you might say “each child is special for the parents, of course they would say their kids are sensitive, empathic or feeling the energy around”. They have different backgrounds, religions, cultures however, one thing was common, they all have special children that are meeting the definition of Indigo or Crystal. What is important here, is that those were the children who had a desire to connect to source, who question existence and who are empathic, curious and strong-willed. Let me know in the comments below. That means, of course, that we can’t get the full picture of Zemo until we see how the events of Civil War change him. Will he become what he hates the most (someone with a suit) in order to stop the Avengers once and for all? Or will he move on and become something more of an anti-anti-hero, possibly leading the Thunderbolts in his own movie? Why does Zemo need to have a beginning, middle, and deadly end within the course of a movie that is already stuffed to the brim with major plot points? Why should he be any of the characters we already know doing battle in the scene depicted below? And I’m all for Marvel slowing down with stories for their villains, who should be just as important. We love, know, and understand these characters. The heroes of the MCU are arguably why we love these movies so much, faults and all. They’re treating them like they would their protagonists. ![]() Now it seems that Marvel (with some help from the Russo brothers and their dream team of screenwriters) is trying something new with its bad guys. Ronan? Uses the infinity stone to gain power and gets killed (presumably) in the end. Red Skull? Becomes Red Skull before the movie even starts, and then he gets killed in the end. Blonsky in The Incredible Hulk also goes through the same process when he becomes the Abomination, only to get killed in the end. We see the origin of Obadiah Stain in Iron Man as he betrays Tony and dons a bigger, badder suit, only to get killed in the end. Take a look at some of the other heavy-hitter villains in the MCU. Also, the film seems very interested in developing Zemo further, likely offering this version of Zemo as more of an origin, foregoing the rest of his arc for future films. For one thing, the film doesn’t kill him off, which is a typical death wish for villains unless your name is Loki. You have to admit, though, that the villain in Civil War is also very different from most of the antagonists we’ve seen play out in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. (Plot spoilers from here on out, so if you haven’t seen Captain America: Civil War, read no further unless you don’t mind getting spoiled.) ![]() In Civil War, he’s muted and seemingly interchangeable. In Civil War, I didn’t see much of this Zemo being played out by the talented Daniel Brühl. It wasn’t until the 80s that the character was involved in some more intriguing story arcs, including his formation of the Thunderbolts, which was a team of villains pretending to be heroes who ultimately become heroes for real because they like it so much. In his early run, Zemo was a fairly generic “bad guy” seeking revenge against the Avengers because his father died while fighting Captain America. The important thing to remember is that most Baron Zemo fans enjoy the more recent incarnations of the character. My initial reaction to Helmut Zemo in Captain America: Civil War was quite similar to the reactions fans and critics have had with most Marvel cinematic villains. ![]() |
